At my Grandma Kate and Grandpa Mel’s, we went hunting along the side of the road for garduna, a rhubarb looking plant. The stems were so filled with dirt that they had to be washed in the washing machine. When they were clean, our parents dipped them in flour and eggs, then pan fried them for a tasty side dish.
Guests always contribute the best dishes to our 4th of July parties. Two of the most consistent and delicious sides are Grandma Carole’s homemade potato salads and Aunt Bev’s Hawaiian salad, with a little extra just for Poppy.
Thank goodness Aunt Therese delights us every Christmas with our favorite corn casserole and cheesy potatoes as sides to her scrumptious feast.
Grandma Yo’s baked beans were one of the first recipes she gave me. She would make them for all of their family parties and picnics.
Grandma Kate canned and pickled all summer. She cooked homemade applesauce.
